Raw Wood Furniture

Raw wood furniture, unpainted on purpose

Most furniture arrives with the decision already made — some factory’s idea of ‘walnut,’ sprayed on before it shipped. Ours shows up raw. The Round Coffee Table, the Modern Console Table, the Nightstand — all sanded smooth in real Baltic birch and sent bare, so the finish is yours to make.

Raw Wood Questions, Answered

What’s the difference between raw wood, unfinished, and unpainted furniture?

For our furniture, they’re the same thing. Every UNFNSHED piece ships as bare Baltic birch — no stain, no paint, no sealer. ‘Raw wood,’ ‘unfinished,’ and ‘unpainted’ all describe a surface that hasn’t had a finish applied yet.

What you do next is the point. The Round Coffee Table or a Modern Shelf can be stained, painted, oiled, or left exactly as it arrives. Our guide to staining unfinished furniture walks through it step by step.

Do you have to seal or finish raw wood furniture?

No — you can leave it raw. Baltic birch has a pale, even grain that looks good bare, and plenty of customers never finish theirs at all. If a piece sees daily wear or moisture, a clear sealer or oil adds protection without changing the look much.

If you do want color, bare wood is the easiest possible starting point. See how to paint bare wood or 7 easy ways to paint unfinished furniture before you start on a Nightstand or Side Table.

Is raw wood furniture cheap, or is it actually good quality?

Raw doesn’t mean cheap. Skipping the factory finish is a choice about who controls the look, not a shortcut on materials. Every piece is built from 13-ply Baltic birch — the same plywood used in real cabinetry, not the particleboard inside most flat-pack furniture.

You’re paying for solid construction and skipping the markup on a finish you’d probably redo anyway. The Modern Console Table and Modern Bench hold up like furniture meant to last, because they are.
