The wood finishes we actually use.
Every stain, paint, sealer, and oil on this page lives on our shop bench. We’ve tested all of them on the Baltic birch we build with — these are the ones we keep buying. Honest picks, not sponsorships.

Spray paints for furniture & plywood
The fastest way to add color or a glossy finish to plywood furniture. We mostly reach for these on smaller pieces and accents.
Glossy Spray Paints
Bold color with a reflective sheen. Spray in a well-ventilated area.
Matte Spray Paints
Beautiful colors without the sheen. Spray in a well-ventilated area.
Low VOC Paints
Requires brush or roller. Great for minimizing paint fumes.
Wood stains
Stain lets the grain show through. Easier to apply than paint and a great fit for Baltic birch plywood — these are the colors we keep coming back to.
Clear coats & wood sealers
A clear coat for wood seals and protects without changing the color much. These are the clear wood sealers we trust on our pieces — from a quick matte spray to one-coat oils like Osmo Polyx.
Clear Matte Spray
Quick protection that preserves natural wood color. Won’t yellow.
Flat Out Flat
Brush, roller, or spray gun. Great for multiple pieces. Won’t yellow.
Osmo Polyx
Adds a warm amber tone. Easy to apply, low VOC. A European favorite.
Natura
One coat protection. Multiple colors available.
Outdoor wood sealers & marine finishes
If you’re using a piece outside or somewhere wet, you need an outdoor wood sealer or marine-grade finish. These are our four picks for the best outdoor wood finish for furniture, decks, and exterior projects.
TotalBoat Gleam
Marine-grade varnish built for boats. UV-resistant and stays glossy through sun and salt.
SEAL-ONCE Marine
Soaks in instead of sitting on top. Waterproof, breathable, low VOC.
Rubio Monocoat Hybrid
One coat and you’re done. Plant-based, zero VOC. The European go-to for outdoor furniture.
Watco Exterior
Classic wipe-on oil from Rust-Oleum. Brings out the grain, protects against weather.
Food-safe & non-toxic wood finishes
For cribs, kids’ tables, kitchen pieces, and anything that gets touched daily. The best food-safe wood finish uses real plant oils — beeswax, linseed, tung — with no solvents, no driers, no heavy metals. These five are our top non-toxic picks.
Baby Safe Crib Finish
Made specifically for cribs. Just beeswax and linseed oil — nothing else. Our top pick for nursery furniture.
Tried & True Original
Warm honey tone that deepens over time. No solvents, no driers, no heavy metals.
HOPE’S Pure Tung Oil
Penetrates deep into the grain. Waterproof and food-safe once cured. Beautiful natural amber.
Odie’s Oil
Premium all-in-one finish. A little goes a long way. The woodworker favorite.
BioShield Counter Finish
All-natural plant-oil blend. Designed for kitchen counters and food prep surfaces.
Other essentials
A few extras that make finishing easier — the brushes, rollers, and tools we always have on the bench.
Wood finish FAQ
What is the best food-safe wood finish?
For anything that touches food or skin daily — cutting boards, kids’ tables, kitchen pieces — we reach for a real plant-oil finish like Tried & True Original (linseed + beeswax) or HOPE’S Pure Tung Oil. Both are 100% non-toxic once cured, with no solvents, no driers, and no heavy metals. Odie’s Oil is our pick when you want one finish that does everything.
What’s the best outdoor wood sealer for furniture?
It depends on the look you want. For a glossy boat-grade finish, TotalBoat Gleam Marine Spar Varnish is the gold standard — UV-resistant and built to flex with the wood. For a natural penetrating look that shows the grain, Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector is a single-coat plant-based option. SEAL-ONCE Marine works as a clear waterproof base layer, and Watco Exterior is a classic wipe-on oil from Rust-Oleum.
What finish should I use on Baltic birch plywood?
Baltic birch takes finishes beautifully. For a natural look, a single coat of Osmo Polyx oil-wax or a clear matte spray protects without yellowing. For color, a water-based wood stain pulls evenly across the grain. For furniture that gets daily use, a clear coat or non-toxic oil like Odie’s Oil seals it permanently. We test every product on our page on Baltic birch before recommending it.
Can you use spray paint on plywood?
Yes — and it’s one of the fastest ways to finish a plywood piece. Sand lightly first, wipe down the dust, then apply two or three light coats. Glossy spray gives a reflective sheen that reads modern; matte spray reads soft and editorial. Always spray in a well-ventilated area and let each coat fully dry before recoating.
How do you finish plywood edges?
Plywood edges show the layered plies, which can be a feature or something to hide. To highlight: sand smooth, then apply the same stain or oil as the rest of the piece — the layers will read as fine stripes. To hide: apply iron-on edge banding before finishing, or fill the edge with wood filler, sand flush, and paint over it. The flat plywood layers on Baltic birch are often clean enough to leave exposed.
Is Rubio Monocoat food safe?
Yes — Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C and Pure are both certified food-safe and toy-safe once fully cured (about 5 days). They’re plant-based, zero VOC, and applied in a single coat. The Hybrid Wood Protector linked on this page is the exterior version, designed for outdoor furniture and decks rather than indoor food-contact surfaces.
