What you'll need:
- Varathane Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner: This isn't necessary, but it makes any stain that you put on wood look less blotchy and more even. If you can manage to get it, you should.
- Varathane Premium Gel Stain - Get the smallest one you can of this. A little goes a long way. You can find this stuff at Home Depot or any similar big box store.
- Varathane Top Coat - Little goes a long way. Adds extra protection of your piece.
- Any rubber gloves if you don't want to stain your hands.
- Rag or brush, either will work fine.
Directions:
- Clean your piece to remove dust.
- Lay pieces flat on cardboard or newspaper.
- Liberally Apply Pre-Stain conditioner evenly to surfaces you're going to stain. Wipe off any excess.
- Let sit for at least 30 minutes
- Flip and repeat on all surfaces you will stain.
- Apply stain with brush or rag liberally.
- Let sit for 2-5 minutes in order to penetrate wood.
- Wipe off any excess evenly with a clean paper towel.
- Let dry for at least an hour, preferably longer.
- Flip and repeat steps 6-9 on all surfaces.
- Repeat again if you want a dark, richer look.
- Apply a clear Gel Topcoat of your choice (Satin is popular)
