An unfinished coffee table you actually want to finish yourself
Most unfinished coffee tables are cheap pine with wobbly legs and a "some assembly required" warning that takes an hour and a bag of hardware. These aren't those.
Our coffee tables are made from 13-ply Baltic birch plywood — the same dense, furniture-grade material used in high-end cabinetry. They ship flat, snap together in about two minutes with no tools, and arrive ready for whatever finish you want: dark walnut stain, matte white paint, natural oil, or nothing at all. The raw birch grain looks good on its own.
Two shapes. Round for small spaces and soft aesthetics. Rectangle for more surface area and a structured look. Both are built to hold your books, your coffee, and whatever your kids throw at them.
Tool-free, slot-together joints. No Allen wrenches, no stripped screws, no leftover mystery parts.
In stock and ships from San Diego. No backorders, no eight-week waits from overseas.
Dense, rigid, and warp-resistant. Stronger than the particleboard inside most "solid wood" furniture.
Stain it, paint it, oil it, or leave it raw. Match your sofa, your floors, or your mood.
Ways to Use an Unfinished Coffee Table
How people style, finish, and live with our coffee tables in real spaces.
A Round Coffee Table with a matte clear coat, a couple of books, and a candle. Pair it with a Side Table in the same raw finish for that quiet, Japandi feel.
The Rectangle Coffee Table has enough surface for puzzles, homework, and dinner-on-the-couch nights. Seal it with polyurethane so water rings aren't a problem.
Sand lightly, prime, and paint any color you want. Sage green, matte black, terracotta — the birch plywood takes paint beautifully. See our painting guide for step-by-step instructions.
Tool-free assembly means you can pack it flat for moves. No tools, no hardware to lose. Stain it dark for a premium look guests notice. Browse our Airbnb Furniture collection for the full setup.
Unfinished wood means crayon marks sand right off. When they inevitably scratch it, sand and re-seal instead of replacing. Pair with a Kids Table & Chairs for their own zone.
Round Coffee Table + Console Table behind the sofa + Modern Shelf on the wall. All matching birch plywood, all assembled in under ten minutes total.
Unfinished Coffee Table Questions
What finish should I use on an unfinished coffee table?
Coffee tables take more abuse than any other furniture — water rings, hot mugs, feet. For maximum protection, use 2-3 coats of water-based polyurethane in a satin finish. It dries clear, won't yellow over time, and cleans up with soap and water. If you want more warmth, an oil-based poly adds a slight amber tone. For the most natural look, a hardwax oil (like Rubio Monocoat) gives a matte, close-to-raw feel while still repelling water.
Can I leave a coffee table unfinished?
You can, but we don't recommend it for a coffee table specifically. Unlike a shelf or wall-mounted piece, a coffee table gets drinks set on it daily. Bare wood will absorb moisture and develop rings. At minimum, apply a natural oil or beeswax to give it basic water resistance while keeping the raw look. Our staining guide covers the full range of options from "barely there" to "fully sealed."
Round vs. rectangle coffee table — which should I pick?
Round tables are better for small spaces because there are no corners to bump into, and they create a more open feel in tight rooms. They work especially well with sectional sofas. Rectangle tables give you more surface area for books, trays, and activities, and work better with standard three-seat sofas. Both of ours are the same height and made from the same material — it really comes down to your room layout.
