What size should a small side table be?
A small side table should sit roughly level with the arm of your sofa or the top of your mattress, usually between 20 and 26 inches tall. Width depends on the gap you're filling. Our Mini Side Table is 10 inches wide and 22 inches tall, which fits next to almost any sofa or bed without blocking a walkway. The Side Table is slightly larger at 14 inches wide for rooms where you have a bit more breathing room. Both hold up to 30 pounds despite their compact size. Can a stool work as a small end table?
Absolutely. A flat-topped stool is one of the most versatile small surfaces you can own. The No Tool Stool is 18 inches tall with a flat top that works as a plant stand, drink table, or book rest. The A-Stool does the same at a slightly different height. The advantage over a dedicated end table: when guests come over, you've got extra seating. When they leave, it goes back to being a surface.
How do you finish a small unfinished wood table?
Small tables are the easiest pieces to finish because there's less surface area to cover. A single coat of matte polyurethane takes about five minutes and dries in a few hours. For color, chalk paint covers in one coat without sanding. Dark walnut stain is our most popular finish and transforms Baltic birch into something that looks three times the price.
