Wall Shelves

Wall shelves that hold real weight and still look clean on your wall

Most wall shelves either look good or hold weight — rarely both. The flimsy floating shelves from big-box stores sag within a month. The industrial ones hold everything but look like they belong in a garage. We wanted wall shelving that could handle a stack of hardcovers, a turntable, or a row of plants without bowing, and still look like it belongs in a living room.

Our Wall Shelves and Wavy Wall Shelves are made from 13-ply Baltic birch plywood in our San Diego workshop. They mount to the wall with included hardware or sit freestanding on a surface. No tools needed for shelf assembly — just for wall mounting. The Modular Wall Shelf lets you add tiers as your collection grows. Every shelf ships unfinished so you can stain, paint, or leave the birch grain exposed.

Why these wall shelves
Holds Real Weight

13-ply Baltic birch plywood. No particle board, no MDF. These shelves hold books, records, plants — not just picture frames.

Ships in 3–5 Days

In stock and ready to ship from San Diego. No eight-week backorder waits.

Mount or Freestand

Wall mount with included hardware, or set on a desk, counter, or console. Works both ways without modification.

Finish It Your Way

Raw Baltic birch is a blank canvas. Stain it dark walnut, paint it white, or let the natural plywood grain do the talking.

Where to Use Wall Shelves

Six ways people actually use our wall shelving — from living rooms to coffee bars.

Wall shelves in a living room above a sofa
Living Room

Mount a pair of Wall Shelves above the sofa for books, candles, and small plants. They replace a bulky bookcase without eating floor space. Add Wavy Wall Shelves nearby for a sculptural accent that doubles as display space.

Wall shelves as a coffee bar station
Coffee Bar

Stack mugs, display bags of beans, or line up pour-over gear. Wavy Wall Shelves add personality to a coffee corner, and the birch grain looks right at home next to ceramic and glass. See our coffee bar setup guide.

Bedroom

A single Wall Shelf above the Nightstand holds whatever doesn't fit on the surface — a book stack, reading lamp, or phone charger. In smaller bedrooms, a Modular Wall Shelf replaces a full dresser-top worth of storage without taking up an inch of floor.

Home Office

Mount Wall Shelves above your Modern Desk for reference books, supplies, and the stuff that would otherwise clutter the desktop. Pair with a Monitor Stand below and you've got a full workstation that takes up one wall, not half a room.

Kids' Room

Front-facing Wall Shelves at kid height make a simple Montessori-style book display. Kids can see covers, grab what they want, and put things back. Pair with a Kids Table and Chairs underneath for a reading nook that takes up almost no space.

Entryway

A Wall Shelf by the front door holds keys, sunglasses, and a small plant. It's the landing pad you didn't know you needed. Below it, a Modern Bench for shoes. The combination takes up about 18 inches of wall — enough to organize an entryway without crowding a hallway.

Wall Shelf Questions, Answered

How much weight can these wall shelves hold?

Our Wall Shelves are made from 13-ply Baltic birch plywood — the same material used in cabinetry and industrial applications. When wall-mounted into studs with the included hardware, each shelf comfortably holds 30+ pounds. That's a full row of hardcovers, a record player, or a lineup of potted plants. The Wavy Wall Shelves hold the same weight with a more sculptural profile. If you need more capacity, the Modular Wall Shelf distributes weight across multiple tiers.

Can I use wall shelves without drilling into the wall?

Yes. Every shelf works freestanding on a desk, counter, console table, or floor. The flat base sits stable on any surface without modification. This makes them ideal for renters who can't drill — you get the look of mounted wall shelving without putting holes in drywall. If you do want to mount them, the included hardware makes it straightforward. Read our guide to customizing wall shelves for more setup ideas.

What's the best way to finish unfinished wall shelves?

Baltic birch takes stain, paint, and clear coat beautifully. For a natural Scandinavian look, a single coat of matte polyurethane brings out the grain while protecting the surface. For color, chalk paint covers in one coat without sanding or priming. Dark walnut stain is our most popular finish — it transforms the birch into something that looks like it costs three times the price. See our guide to painting unfinished wood or our staining guide for step-by-step instructions.
