Modern Benches

Entryway benches, bedroom benches, and dining benches from real plywood

A bench does what a chair can't: it seats two or three people, tucks against a wall, slides under a table, and doubles as a surface when nobody's sitting. Most benches are either too heavy to move or too flimsy to sit on. Ours are made from 13-ply plywood, light enough to reposition with one hand but strong enough to hold two adults.

The Modern Bench comes in multiple lengths to fit entryways, bedrooms, and dining tables. Every bench assembles without tools, ships flat in 3-5 days, and arrives unfinished so you stain, paint, or leave the birch grain as-is. Pair it with a Console Table in the entryway or a Coffee Table in the living room.

Benches for Every Room

Six ways a bench works harder than a chair.

Entryway bench with shoes underneath
Entryway Bench

An entryway bench gives you a place to sit while putting on shoes, and storage underneath for the shoes themselves. The Modern Bench tucks against the wall or under a Console Table. It's the first piece of furniture guests interact with and the last thing you use on the way out. See our entryway bench guide for sizing help.

End of bed bench in a bedroom
End of Bed Bench

A bedroom bench at the foot of the bed holds tomorrow's clothes, a throw blanket, or a bag. It gives you a place to sit that isn't the bed itself. The Modern Bench is low enough to not block the view of the bed and long enough to span the width of a queen or king. Read our bedroom bench guide.

Dining bench at a table
Dining Bench

Replace chairs on one side of the dining table with a Modern Bench. It seats more people in less space, tucks completely under the table when not in use, and makes a small dining area feel less crowded. Kids can slide in and out without pushing chairs back. It's the reason benches have been standard in kitchens for centuries.

Indoor bench in a living room
Living Room

A bench against the wall in the living room provides extra seating when guests come over without the visual weight of additional armchairs. When nobody's sitting, it holds a stack of books, a plant, or serves as a low display surface. It's the flexible seat that doesn't commit you to a permanent furniture arrangement.

Bench used as a window seat
Window Seat

Push a Modern Bench under a window and add a cushion. That's a reading nook. The low profile keeps the sightline to the window clear while giving you a dedicated spot to sit with a book or a cup of coffee. In a bedroom, it turns dead floor space under the window into the most used seat in the room.

Bench in a mudroom with shoes and bags
Mudroom

A mudroom bench handles the worst of it: wet shoes, dirty backpacks, soccer cleats. Premium-grade plywood is moisture-resistant and wipes clean. Seal it with a coat of polyurethane and it handles anything. Mount Wall Shelves above for hooks, baskets, and seasonal gear. The bench anchors the whole mudroom system.

Bench Questions, Answered

What size bench fits at the end of a bed?

An end-of-bed bench should be slightly narrower than the bed. For a queen (60 inches wide), a 46-inch bench leaves room on each side for walking. For a king (76 inches), a 60-inch bench works well. Height should be at or below the top of the mattress so it doesn't block the bed visually. Our Modern Bench comes in multiple lengths to match standard bed sizes.

How much weight does a plywood bench hold?

Our benches are made from 13-ply plywood with interlocking joints. Each bench supports well over 300 pounds. That's two adults sitting side by side with room to spare. The plywood construction distributes weight across the full span, unlike dowel-jointed benches that stress single connection points. These are built for daily sitting, not just display.

Can you use a bench as a dining seat?

Yes. Benches have been dining seating for longer than chairs have. A Modern Bench on one side of the table seats 2-3 people in the space that 2 chairs would take. The flat seat is more comfortable than it looks. Premium-grade plywood has a slight give that solid hardwood doesn't, and you can always add a cushion or throw for longer meals. The bench tucks fully under most dining tables when not in use.
